If it seems slightly odd that a company calling itself The New Jersey Association of Versimo Opera was performing a staple of the bel canto repertoire, one could take solace by twisting the definition a bit to accommodate the choice. Verismo is distinguished by realistic "slice of life" (oftimes sordid and lower class) depictions of everyday life. Let's stop there and satisfy ourselves with the fact that L'elisir d'amore is entirely realistic in it's depiction of rustic peasant life. It is a charmingly told tale of love requited with the requisite happiest of endings snugly ensconced in the Italian opera buffa tradition.
Lucine Amara, Artistic Director of the company, and one of the operatic world's great singers, gave an articulate speech, in the beginning of the evening, asking for support of the arts and this company in general. She rightly pointed out that companies such as New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera are a needed training and development ground for the future singing stars of tomorrow. |
