Rare Verismo
At first glance, it seems as though it might go horribly wrong – a solo tenor singing Italian verismo arias with only a chamber ensemble accompaniment. After all, these are arias usually accompanied by full orchestra. And then you hear Marco Berti's tenor voice, full-blooded, completely exposed in this close-up recording, and everything just works. Whether singing Verdi's Ecco la Casa from Le Villi, or Mhai salvato from Catalanis' La Wally, Berti's voice has power and judgment, while arias like Leoncavallo's La boheme reveal the depth of talent among Italian composers deserving of a wider audience.
