The Origins of Comic Opera |

|
Comic opera, which was hugely popular in the English theater during the Edwardian era, traced its origins to Italy in the early eighteenth century. In Naples at that time, a trend developed in mainstream opera productions of rounding off the acts with short comic pieces. At first these would stem directly from the overall plot of the production, but over time they began to become increasingly separate from it, developing into self-contained short pieces with a separate plot of their own. Called 'intermezzi', these comic opera interludes soon proved to be the most popular part of the show, so it was inevitable that they would break away from the mainstream and become full operas, of the comic variety, in their own right.
The Golden Age of Theater
The Golden Age of Theater in England is generally regarded as being that period from around 1870 through until approximately 1920 (the years suggested being only very approximate and subject to some interpretation). That is not to suggest that theater in England was unknown before 1870, far from it, theater as an essential element of English culture dates back much, much further. Nor should it be intimated that English theater died after 1920, no indeed, it is still very much alive today and hopefully will continue to thrive for the foreseeable future.
